EF ENGLISHTOWN FAQS

What would you like to know more about?

Before joining our school you may have some questions you'd like to ask us. We've provided some answers to commonly asked questions below, but if you can't find the answer you need, call us. We're happy to help.

What courses does EF Englishtown offer?

Our school is made up of 16 general English levels, ranging from beginner to advanced proficiency. Within each of those levels, we'll teach you useful vocabulary and grammar for real-life work, travel and social situations. You'll steadily build confidence in your English reading, writing, and listening skills, and our teacher-led classes will particularly develop your all-important speaking expertise.

We also offer specialised course options:

Business English - Short on time, but looking to get ahead in your job? We'll teach you to communicate professionally in any workplace.

Job-specific English - Learn to perform key tasks in English for the medical, legal, IT, hospitality, tourism, automotive or finance industries.

TOEFL or TOEIC - Achieve a high score in either test and you'll open up a world of opportunity. We'll help you prepare and practice to succeed.

What English language skills will I learn?

At each level in our school you'll learn useful language for real-life situations you are likely to find yourself in at work, on holiday or communicating with other English speakers. You can find a detailed list of the skills you'll learn on each level here.

How long is each course?

There's no fixed answer to this, as every student learns at their own pace. As a guide, you should expect each unit to take a minimum of 3 - 4 hours to complete. Every level contains six units, so you are likely to need 18 - 24 hours to complete a level and earn your diploma certified by Hult International Business School. Remember, our school is designed to fit into your life, so you can make progress with just a few minutes study each day. You'll soon see the results.

How do the EF Englishtown learning levels work?

When you join our school, we'll invite you to take our English test. This will accurately gage your proficiency level, so we can recommend which of our 16 levels you should start from. Alternatively, you can self-select a level or course at any time. To ensure your results are recognised globally, we've aligned each stage of our course with CEFR common reference levels. Levels 1 - 3 are for beginners (CEFR A1), 4 - 6 are for elementary students (CEFR A2), 7 - 9 are for intermediate (CEFR B1), 10 - 12 for upper intermediate (CEFR B2), 13 - 15 for advanced (CEFR C1) and level 16 is for upper advanced students (CEFR C2). Each level contains six study units that we'll guide you through step by step. Every time you complete a level, you'll receive a diploma certified by Hult International Business School to prove your achievement.

Are the instructions in English, or my language?

Instructions within our school are available in a number of different languages: including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Arabic and Turkish. And if you'd like to test yourself, you can view it all in English too.

How does EF Englishtown work?

We make it simple: learn, try, apply, certify. We've divided English language learning into short lessons and classes that fit into your life: we call it the Efekta(R) system. It begins with learning useful English in our interactive course lessons. You then try and apply the language with our skilled and supportive teachers. Our method is unique and highly effective, try us to experience the difference.

Is online learning as effective as face-to-face classes?

We believe it's more so. In a face-to-face class you have limited time with a teacher, who in turn can only provide you with limited resources. Our school removes those limits: offering you live teaching and instant feedback on your written work, anytime. Because we're a global educator, there is always a friendly and professional teacher ready to help you. And because you can study whenever you like, 24/7, you'll find it easier to fit more learning into your life. Our self-study tools, entertaining lessons, social Group Classes and tailored one-to-one Private Classes will help you develop your skills to a high level.

Do I have to have a lot of technical knowledge?

Not at all. When you join us, we'll help you to set up your software, microphone and speakers or headset. We've made sure our school has clear instructions to help you move easily from lesson to lesson, and we'll create a Study Plan tailored to your needs to ensure you make constant progress. If you do need help or advice at any time, our student support team are always available.

What if I'm a total beginner?

Don't worry, you're not alone. Our school is made up of 16 general English levels, ranging from absolute beginner to advanced standard. We'll start by introducing you to the basics of speaking English, and build your skills and confidence from there. And with instructions available in many languages, you won't have to worry about getting confused.

What if I'm just looking to improve my existing English skills?

Many of our students have studied English before joining us, and are attracted to our school because of our unique focus on verbal and professional language skills. Our school offers 16 CEFR-aligned study levels ranging from beginner to advanced; we'll start by testing your proficiency to accurately place you at the right level. From there, we'll steadily build and perfect your existing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It's your school and you can choose to study your way; so if you're looking to target your learning for the workplace or for test preparation, we can help with that too.

What equipment do I need to study online?

Our school is available via a web browser, and as an iPad® and Android™ tablet app. To ensure you have the best experience in our school, we recommend that you download the latest version of your browser, Flash Player and Java software for free from the internet. You'll need an internet connection to use our school; however you can download some lessons on your tablet to study when you're not connected. To join our Group and Private Classes, and to use our speech recognition tools, you'll need a microphone, and speakers or a headset for your device. We'll help you get set up as soon as you join.

Can someone help me if I need support?

Help is available whenever you need it via our extensive help section, tutorial videos and webinars, or our student support team who will answer all of your email questions. Just click on the contact us link on the top right of any page.

Who are EF Englishtown teachers?

We have teachers from English speaking countries like the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. They are specially selected and trained to teach English online. They all share some information about themselves in our school, so you can get to know them before meeting them in a class.

How do Group and Private Classes work?

Group Classes start at least every hour, 24/7, and during peak times you'll find even more classes available. There's no need to book, so you can easily fit a class into your day with little planning. Our Group Classes cover a different topic each day, so you'll know in advance what language you'll be using if you'd like to prepare a few words and phrases. Your class is led by a skilled and friendly teacher, plus up to six same-level students from all over the world. Your teacher will ask questions, and any student can choose to answer them. Don't worry if you make mistakes, they help the whole class to learn and make progress. Your teacher will send you helpful written feedback and suggestions after each lesson. Group Classes are a very social way to learn, plus, hearing people speaking English with different accents is a valuable way to prepare yourself for communicating in the real world.

Private Classes are 40-minute one-to-one sessions between yourself and an expert teacher. Classes are available all day, every day - however you will need to book at least 24 hours in advance. It's your time and your lesson, so you can request to study something specific, or let the teacher decide. Either way, your native English speaking or skilled bilingual teacher will carefully prepare a class designed for your learning needs and study level. You'll receive instant correction and explanation during your class, and written feedback at the end; suggesting areas to work on before your next class. It's this personalised feedback that makes our Private Classes the most effective way to build your skills and confidence. All of our teachers are trained to teach and support you online, so you can be sure that you're in safe hands.

Will I get feedback from my teachers?

Yes, we think it's the best way for you to perfect your skills. Not only will you receive instant results in your self-study course lessons, your teacher will also send you helpful written feedback and suggestions after each Group or Private Class. You will also complete one written exercise in each study unit, and receive detailed feedback from a teacher within 48 hours.
