Your Course

What is in a course?

Each course covers a complete skills set (reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and communication) within a certain context, which is applied through fun and interactive activities.

A Unit is divided into 4 sections:

  1. Watch: Introduces the Unit's topics through movies and simulation activities.
  2. Learn: Includes a wide variety of lessons that cover vocabulary, listening, speaking and grammar skills.
  3. Try: submit your writing and go to our group lesson
  4. Test: Enables you to test the skills you learned in the Unit.
Our courses include: Movies, Simulations, Study maps, Vocabulary flashcards, Interactive language games and more.

Once you have completed a section, it will be noted on the Unit overview.
If the activity is marked as Incomplete, it means that you have not yet finished this activity with a passing grade of at least 70%. Scoring above 70% is necessary to move on to the next Unit/Level.
The grades of completed activities are displayed in your progress report, which you can easily access by clicking the "progress report" link under My courses on the left menu.

Each lesson has several pages. To move from page to page, you can use the underlined numbers in the upper left corner.

and like this:

You can also use the "Back" and "Next" buttons found at the bottom of the page.

How do I meet with a teacher?

Speak with native-speaking teachers in live conversation lessons, using the Englishtown Virtual Classroom.
Native-speaking professional teachers lead every lesson. They are live in every time zone, around the clock.

A lesson at each level starts every hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I attend one?
Go to My Account to see how many conversation classes you can attend per month. We discourage switching sessions in the beginning of the class, as it is highly disruptive to other students.

A new Discussion Class begins every hour!

When you want to meet with a teacher, click on the discussion activity in the Unit you are working on.

When it is time for a session, click the “enter now” link.

Read the discussion topic ahead of time.

The discussion room link appears at the start time. 10 minutes after the start time, the link disappears.

Click 'Refresh' on your browser to get the updated time.

Each session lasts 45 minutes. You must participate in the entire session to receive credit.

To make sure your computer has the correct settings we suggest you download the Virtual Classroom from our technical check.

How do I know what to talk about in class?

You can see the conversation topics for the week in two places: there is a "conversation topics" link in the conversation class page as well as in the left menu on the course page.

Where can I see my Conversation Class grade?
In order to receive a grade you must attend the class for a minimum of 30 minutes and actively participate in the class.
You can see your conversation grade in your "Progress Report" and in "My Portfolio". To get a grade you should attend and participate in the class for at least 30 minutes

What is the Writing Class?

There are eight writing classes in every Classic English course, one in each unit.

How do I get my corrections and my grade?
There are eight writing classes in every Classic English course. There is one writing in every unit. In units 1-3 and 5-7 you will write an essay based on an actual TOEFL® Test of Written English topic and get an automatic diagnostic report. In unit 4 and 8, a teacher grades your writing.

For our business courses, your writings will be corrected by our teachers in every 3rd Level.

When you submit your writing to a teacher, it will be corrected within 48 hours. You can view your writing grade, the corrections your teacher made, as well as his/her comments by clicking on "My portfolio" in your course overview. Your teacher will also send you the correction and post your writing grade to your report card.

Your essay will then be reviewed and returned to you with helpful comments on how to improve your writing skills.

We recommend that you draft your writing in a Word or Text file and then copy and paste it into the writing box in the lesson. This way you will always have a copy of your writing.

It’s been more than 48 hours, why haven’t I received my writing back?
The most common reason that students don’t receive their writing corrections is because the email address in their personal profile is incorrect.

Teachers send the writing corrections to the email address listed in your personal file. Please check to make sure this address is correct.

The writing you submit in lessons other than Writing Class and Case Study are posted to a student board to be shared with your classmates at Englishtown.

Where can I view my writings?

My writing portfolio

You can view your writings, corrections and grades in your writing portfolio in your course.

Click on "My Writing Portfolio" in your left navigation bar to view corrected writings.

Your essays will appear in chronological order by submission dates.

Once you have submitted an essay, it will be saved with a unique "Writing ID" in your portfolio. Click on the "Writing ID" to view your essay with your teacher’s corrections.

Good job! You have received a passing grade of at least 70%. You can move to the next activity in your unit!

How do I play the ‘Word drop’ activity?

Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to place each word in a particular basket. Do not use your mouse!

What is the difference between the Unit & Final tests?

At the end of every Unit you are being tested particularly on the content of that Unit, while the final test covers the content of the past 8 Units. If you do not receive a 70% or higher on the test, you must take the test again in order to move on to the next Unit.

Can I take the test more than once?
If you do not receive a 70% or higher on the test, you must take the test again in order to move on to the next unit. You can take the test as many times as necessary until you receive a passing grade.
You may want to take the test again to improve your grade or get extra practice.

What if I get an error message after clicking "Submit"?
An error message usually means that the web page or your internet connection has timed out. This occurs when a student rests too long on one page. If this happens, you can take the test again. We recommend students write their assignments in an off-line document first and copy it into the space provided. If you or your service provider uses a proxy server, this is more likely to happen.
