The Land of the Kiwi

Do you know where Russell Crowe, star of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, was born?

Do you know which country was the first to give women the vote in 1893?

Do you know which country is often nicknamed "Adrenaline Capital of the World" because of the number of exhilarating outdoor activities offered there?

Do you know which country has more sheep per capita than any other?

Finally, in what country are the people, the national

emblem, and the local currency all called "Kiwi's"?

If you answered "New Zealand" to these questions, you'd be right!

New Zealand lies southeast of Australia between the latitudes of 34 and 47 degrees south. It's roughly a three-hour flight from Sydney, Australia, to Auckland, New Zealand. The country is becoming more popular as a tourist destination thanks to the movie series "The Lord of the Rings". The trilogy, based on the books by J.R.R Tolkien, was filmed in New Zealand under the direction of New Zealander Peter Jackson.

New Zealand has a relatively small population of about 3.8 million people (and 45 million sheep!) English and Maori are the two official languages. The Maoris, the native people of New Zealand, make up about 14% of the population.

Over the years, many European and Pacific Islands immigrants settled in New Zealand, but many of the place names are still Maori in origin. If you make it to New Zealand, you can say 'kia ora' (pronounced "kee-a or-rah"), which means means "hello."
